Adopting Puppies: Akita Appearance and Personality

The Akita is a dog breed originating in Japan and is one of seven breeds designated as a national monument of Japan. A small Akita statue signifies health, happiness and long life. These statues are usually given to families of Japan when a child is born. If a person is ill, friends will send a small statue of an Akita to express wishes for a quick recovery.

There was a time in Japan's history when Akita ownership was restricted to the Imperial family and the ruling aristocracy. The dog was bred as a versatile hunting dog in the rugged mountains of Northern Japan.

Helen Keller is credited for bringing the first Akita into the United States.
